Gary Lineker gives damning VAR assessment after Arsenal penalty call, it ‘can never work…’

Both Gary Lineker and Alan Shearer have slammed the decision to award a penalty against Arsenal in their draw with Everton in the Premier League.

The Gunners took the lead in their final encounter at Goodison Park as Leandro Trossard opened the scoring, firing an effort into the back of the net on the counter-attack.

After the break, there would be controversy as Everton were awarded a penalty following a foul by Myles Lewis-Skelly on Jack Harrison.

There was minimal contact, with Mark Clattenburg claiming a penalty against Arsenal was unlucky and not enough to be given.

Regardless of that, though, VAR didn’t overturn the decision as Illiman Ndiaye stroked home the equaliser.

Arsenal were unable to find a winner as they were forced to settle for another draw in the Premier League.

Gary Lineker and Alan Shearer question Everton penalty decision vs Arsenal

After the game, plenty of the talking points surrounded referee Darren England and the bizarre penalty decision he awarded.

Arsenal will feel it’s another referee decision against them, following a campaign of what feels like plenty of them.

It was a moment that Alan Shearer disagreed with on BBC Match of the Day as he said: “I think it’s very, very soft.

“I think either way you look at it, [scoffs]. No, not enough to give a penalty for me and they’re not going to overturn it, I think that’s very, very harsh.”

Gary Lineker agreed, taking it one step further as he said: “This is why VAR can never work in the current format.

“Because you’ve got to decide whether it’s enough of a foul, which doesn’t make no sense.”

It underlines plenty of the problems that Arsenal have faced with officials this season, not that it will bring them much comfort.

That in itself puts the Premier League title even further away, with it being just a few games away from being sorted.

How many wins do Liverpool need to beat Arsenal to the Premier League title?

As it stands, Liverpool are just four wins away from being crowned as Premier League champions this year ahead of Arsenal.

The Reds could win the title as early as April 27th against Tottenham, with four matches remaining for the side after that.

One of those games after is against the Gunners, which could force Mikel Arteta and his side to give a guard of honour to the newly crowned champions.

Arsenal will be hopeful that doesn’t happen, but with just one defeat this season, the Reds will be edging closer to getting the win over the line.

It appears like a case of when and not if Liverpool lift the title this season.
