Gary Neville believes that Arsenal were absolutely right to keep Max Dowman away from the media duties after his goal against Everton.
The 16-year-old stole the headlines in the Premier League over the weekend as he became the division’s youngest-ever goal scorer.
How many Premier League goals will Max Dowman score before he’s 20? 😳
Exceptional.
Dowman is already being compared to Lamine Yamal, which shows how quickly his name has risen into prominence around the world of football.
After the teenager’s goal, Neville has been speaking about the importance of keeping him grounded and out of the spotlight, given his age.
Gary Neville was relieved that Max Dowman did not do interviews after his first Arsenal goal
Gary Neville was relieved that Arsenal did not make Max Dowman do interviews after his first goal against Everton.
Viktor Gyokeres spoke after the game instead, which the former Manchester United defender was pleased to see, rather than the teenager.
“There’s no easy shortcut or route to the end for Max Dowman, but it’s a beautiful moment for him. He obviously didn’t do any interviews after the game last night, which I think is completely and utterly acceptable,” Neville told Sky Sports.
“I think it was right that Gyokeres did the interview I saw at the end of the match, and I actually wondered whether Max Dowman would do the interview.
How closely do you think Max Dowman will follow in Lamine Yamal’s footsteps?
“I waited to see it to see whether he would, and he didn’t, which I think is absolutely right to keep him away from it, try and keep him off social media.”
Arsenal have seen players like Ethan Nwaneri, Myles Lewis-Skelly and Charlie Patino hyped up very early, and then the pressure is too much.
The Gunners need to learn from these situations, and hopefully, with Dowman, they will have learned their lesson.
Gary Neville backs Arsenal teammates to support Max Dowman
Neville also claims that at Arsenal, Dowman has teammates who will support him because they are all ‘hard-working’ players.
“He’s got some good people around him at that club. I think like Declan Rice, Bukayo Saka, Zubimendi and Odegaard.
“I never look at any of those players and think they’re arrogant, they get carried away or they’re big-headed. I think they’re just really good lads who I see working hard every single week. All of them, really.”
