Graeme Souness makes truly baffling claim about one Arsenal legend, it’s his worst opinion yet

Graeme Souness has made some truly ridiculous comments over the years, but he may have just outdone himself with a terrible opinion about Arsenal icon Arsene Wenger.

The legendary Frenchman is widely regarded as one of the greatest managers in the history of the game.

Wenger achieved incredible things during his time at Arsenal, and his footballing brain is on another planet compared to Souness.

That has probably made the former Liverpool man a bit insecure, which is why he has aimed a needless dig at Wenger now.

Graeme Souness says Arsenal legend Arsene Wenger ‘got very, very lucky’

Souness was a great player for Liverpool back in the day and did some decent work as a manager as well after his playing career came to an end.

The Scot’s last managerial job was at Newcastle United, where he spent an awful amount of money and brought no success. He was sacked in 2006 after less than 18 months there.

Souness has just been a pundit since, and the only time he ever gets any attention is when he makes a controversial statement.

Now, the 71-year-old is back at it again, and he has made a truly ridiculous claim about Arsenal legend Wenger – a man Souness is clearly very bitter about.

In a conversation with Simon Jordan on the Front Three podcast, Souness first claimed that Wenger is not a football man. When accused of being ‘bitter’, he changed his tune and said he didn’t know if the Frenchman was a football man or not.

Jordan praised Wenger and asked Souness: “Do you like him? Do you think he’s a football man?”

He replied: “No, not particularly.” When asked why, he said: “I’ve been on the bench, listening to what he’s telling his players to do. I’ve been working for Sky in games where he has made very strange decisions.

“My take on it is he got very, very lucky at a time when French football produced its greatest-ever group of players. He inherited the best back-five in world football and a 22-year-old Bergkamp, I think Wright still had life in him.

“To compound that, I was working with Sky with a rather well-known Arsenal player. Arsenal were 2-0 down at half time and I asked what Arsene would be saying now. He just shook his said. He said ‘he won’t be saying anything’.

“Then, he had 10 years when he won a couple of FA Cups because that cycle had been and gone.”

When asked if he’s being mean-spirited, Souness said: “No, I have never spoken to him about football. He never came to my office after a game, he was the only manager who never did. I’d go to his office after a game and he’d never be there to talk football.

“I don’t know if he’s a football man or not. I’ve never spoken football with him.”

Souness’ foolish comments are his worst opinion yet

Souness has made a lot of silly comments over the years – from saying Declan Rice is not world-class to having a million rants about Paul Pogba, he has almost always been negative.

A few people perhaps agreed with some of his past claims, but we will be shocked if there’s anyone on the planet who sides with him and says that Wenger is not a football man.

That is the most foolish statement we’ve heard from someone who has played the game.

Wenger has done more to football than Souness could even dream of. He is a two-time double-winner, is the only manager in the history of the Premier League to go an entire season unbeaten, won more FA Cups than anyone else and is an absolute legend of the game.

Almost every player who played under Wenger will admit that the Frenchman made them better and helped prolong their careers.

We always knew Souness was capable of making ridiculous statements, but he has gone to the next level now. He’s clearly bitter that Wenger never spoke to him and is probably a bit jealous of his success too.
