Arsenal fans have been rocked by the news that Edu Gaspar is set to leave the club.

Arsenal sporting director Edu Gaspar is reportedly due to stand down from his position.

The Brazilian has been in his post at the Emirates Stadium since the summer of 2019, and has worked closely with Mikel Arteta to make the Gunners a competitive force again.

The 46-year-old has overseen the North London club’s transfer business, bringing the likes of Declan Rice, Martin Odegaard, and Kai Havertz, amongst others, into the squad.

Edu has also been involved with the Hale End academy, working with Per Mertesacker to identify potential stars of the future.

The former midfielder wields huge influence at the club, and his absence will leave an enormous hole in the hierarchy. It is not yet clear how he will be replaced in the long-term. However, it is known that Edu made the decision to leave Arsenal himself, which suggests that the club may not have a plan in place for his departure.

Arsenal response to Edu Gaspar exit news

As far as the club are concerned, they do not want to give anything away in terms of what will happen next.

According to journalist Alex Howell, reporting on X: “Arsenal not commenting on the reports that sporting director Edu is set to leave the club.”

Meanwhile, Arsenal fans are concerned that Edu’s exit will have a negative impact on the club’s prospects of future success.

What Arsenal stance on Edu departure says about the club

Given that Arsenal are unwilling to comment on Edu’s impeding exit, it is clear that the club did not necessarily want the information to be made public so soon. This suggests that the Gunners may well have to deal with an internal leak on top of everything else.

At this stage, there is likely a great deal of uncertainty behind the scenes. Arteta may also be somewhat worried about his own future.

Form on the pitch has been poor recently, and the manager is now losing one of his great allies. Some Arsenal fans have called for Arteta to be sacked, and his position within the club has likely now been weakened.

The club need to break their silence and provide clarity on this situation as soon as possible, for the good of all involved.
