Arsenal have been dealt a major blow as star youngster Myles Lewis-Skelly was shown a straight red card against Wolves.

With the game poised at 0-0 at Molineux, Lewis-Skelly tripped Matt Doherty on the edge of the Wolves box after an Arsenal attack had broken down.

To most people’s surprise, Michael Oliver brandished a red card from his pocket, dismissing the left-back instantly.

Although Arsenal went on to win 1-0 courtesy of a Riccardo Calafiori volley, the Gunners will be left deflated at the thought of losing their prized academy graduate for the foreseeable future.

Myles Lewis-Skelly will be suspended for three matches after Wolves red card

With the Premier League deeming Lewis-Skelly’s offence an act of violent conduct, the 18-year-old will miss Arsenal’s next three matches, as per the top flight’s rules.

The suspension doesn’t impact the Gunners’ mid-week trip to Spain to face Girona, but will come into effect after that, for three domestic fixtures.

Lewis-Skelly won’t play in the North Londoners crucial match at home to Manchester City next weekend.

He’ll then miss the second leg of Arsenal’s EFL Cup semi-final away at Newcastle, before serving the final match of his ban in a trip to Leicester City.

How will Mikel Arteta cope without Lewis-Skelly?

Arsenal fans were furious about Oliver’s decision to send Lewi-Skelly off, and it’s no surprise given the player’s excellent recent form.

The teenager has demonstrated maturity beyond his years in that role, and Mikel Arteta’s side will no doubt miss his combative physicality and ability to evade pressure.

In his absence, match-winner Calafiori will likely step up to the plate.

The Italian has struggled with injury of late, but has all the attributes to excel in the Premier League and under Arteta.

However, the Spanish boss will have to manage Calafiori’s fitness carefully, and thus it would be no surprise to see Kieran Tierney or Oleksandr Zinchenko start at least one of the three fixtures Lewis-Skelly is suspended for.
