Arsenal legend Ian Wright believes the club’s board hasn’t done enough to back Mikel Arteta amid their Premier League struggles this season.

It comes as the Gunners now sit 13 points behind league leaders Liverpool, a gap that seems insurmountable.

It leaves Mikel Arteta with the real possibility of missing out on another Premier League title, while the Champions League remains the only other trophy opportunity.

As Arsenal are already looking to assess the season and where it has gone wrong, Ian Wright has hit out at the board for their part in it.

Ian Wright hits out at Arsenal board over transfer strategy

Arsenal legend Ian Wright reflected on a frustrating season for the Gunners, backing Mikel Arteta despite the difficulties.

Instead, he took aim at the Arsenal owners and the board, believing they hadn’t done enough to help the manager.

Speaking on Stick to Football, he said: “I think the board [are at fault] personally. I’m going with the board here. They have not helped this man, he’s coached us as far as he can.”

He continued: “I was really gutted to see Edu leave at this time because obviously the plan, he may not see the end of it, he can’t see the end for whatever reason.

“Is it because he knows the board aren’t going to give them what they need so they can get to where they’re going?

“I’ve got no problem with Mikel, but I do believe the summer, especially after the season we had chasing City to second twice now, there’s no way we shouldn’t be backed more, no way this manager shouldn’t be backed more with who he wants and what he wants to build so we can get over the line.”

It shows exactly where plenty of the frustration in the fanbase is located as the season appears to fall apart.

Arsenal board face huge summer transfer decision

After seemingly falling short this season, the Arsenal board face a huge summer to get the fanbase back behind them.

The core of the squad is in a good position, but those luxury players in the forward areas are missing and will cost big money.

A centre-forward and a winger appear to be on the cards, while a midfielder and possible centre-back cover could also be an option.

It remains to be seen exactly how much money will be available to Mikel Arteta, not least with PSR restrictions.

However, it is key to any future hopes that the Arsenal boss is backed in the market.
