Arsenal suffered a 2-0 defeat to Newcastle United in the first leg of their EFL Cup semi-final clash.
The Gunners weren’t bad by any means. They dominated possession, got into some good areas and created plenty of chances.
But, Mikel Arteta’s men failed to convert the opportunities that they created for themselves, and that was the reason why they ended up on the losing side.
Like the rest of us, Arsenal legend Ian Wright was disappointed with the result at the Emirates Stadium on Tuesday night.
Ian Wright sends a message to Arsenal’s board after defeat against Newcastle
Not many people rate the EFL Cup very highly, but it is still a trophy.
Arsenal have only won the competition on two occasions in their history. The last time was back in 1993 – nearly 32 years ago.
Arteta has taken the EFL Cup seriously this season, and he named a strong lineup against Newcastle United at the Emirates on Tuesday night.
Sadly for him, the Gunners just couldn’t find the back of the net despite generating plenty of big opportunities to score.
After the game, Wright sent a message to the Arsenal board, urging them to ‘help’ Arteta and give him what he needs in the ongoing transfer window.
He said on ITV after the game: “You’ve got to look at the board now! I don’t know what you do but you’ve got to try and do something.
“Listening to Anthony Gordon, once they go deep, Newcastle, they feel there’s not going to be enough that’s going to breach them apart from what we saw with Martinelli and we didn’t see that often enough.
“He (Arteta) needs help. I know it’s very difficult to get anything in this January window but he needs something else because if it’s gonna carry on like this, it’s going to be very difficult to score.
“We’re not scoring with the corners, we’re not scoring with the chances we’re making, something needs to change. Something needs to happen!”

What should Stan Kroenke do to help Arsenal now?
Stan Kroenke, like most other owners of football clubs, has come under a lot of criticism during his time at Arsenal, but he has done a good job in recent years.
The American has backed Arteta with a lot of money, and the Arsenal manager has built a team capable of challenging for the big trophies.
Now, the next step is to put the icing on the cake with a prolific striker. That will cost a ton of money again, but it’s an investment that Kroenke and the Arsenal board have to make.
If Alexander Isak played for Arsenal instead of Newcastle on Tuesday night, the Gunners would’ve likely won that game 4-0.
We don’t know if Isak will be available in this window, but we really hope Kroenke and the board will listen to Wright and help Arteta in the coming days.
