Mikel Merino has been a big miss for Arsenal this year.

A foot injury in January forced the Spaniard to undergo surgery, and he has been out of action since.

There was a worry that Merino would be ruled out for the whole season and also the World Cup, but that may not be the case.

It looks like the midfielder is closing in on a return from his injury.

Ian Wright says he’s hearing that Mikel Merino is on his way back from injury

Ian Wright is well-connected about all things Arsenal.

The legendary Englishman is very close to the players and staff inside the Sobha Realty Training Centre, which makes us think that he is privy to some inside information.

Wright was on punditry duty during Arsenal’s 1-0 win against Newcastle United on Saturday.

The Gunners got the job done in that game, but there are concerns about Kai Havertz’s injury that forced him to come off the pitch.

Wright admitted after the game that he was worried, but what caught our eye were his comments about Merino.

He said on Premier League Productions: “I’m hearing that Mikel Merino is on his way back as well.

“We don’t know how fit he will be, but he’s similar to Havertz in the way that he can link play, come and play in a corner situation like that, and he’s a great finisher in the box.

“Fingers crossed that he can come back in the mix in maybe a week or so, in two weeks, and fill that gap.”

Arsenal have really missed Mikel Merino

Arsenal fans have never really considered Merino to be a key player for them, but everyone will accept that they have missed him over the last few months.

The Spain international’s intelligence in midfield, combined with the huge threat he offers in front of goal, is what makes him an incredible player.

Arsenal could’ve done with that in some of their more difficult games in recent months, but the focus now should be on getting him back fit very soon.

If Mikel Arteta can have Merino available even for the last three games of the season, we think he could make a massive difference in the Premier League and Champions League.
