Ian Wright has said Arsenal have a chance to beat Bayern Munich in the UEFA Champions League next month for one key reason.

The Gunners progressed to the quarter-finals of Europe’s premier club competition after a dramatic penalty shootout win against FC Porto, with Arsenal drawing Bayern for the final eight.

Given the north London side’s traumatic history facing Bayern when Arsenal were last in the Champions League, former scars have been reopened in recent days ahead of this massive European clash.

Yet speaking on Wrighty’s House, Arsenal legend Wright said Mikel Arteta’s side have a chance at beating Bayern given how different the game will be compared to Porto, who had one aim of sitting back and defending.

Wright said about facing Bayern: “What I saw against Porto and the way they stifled us, yes we got it done in the end through penalties, but I’m not sure Bayern are going to come to our place and be that defensive.

“I think that’s where we’ll probably get something. If we are able to play, then we’ve got a chance. I don’t think teams will be as defensive as Porto were, they really stifled us and the real chances we got were a disallowed goal and one that Trossard scored.

“Other than that, we’re now in a round where teams are coming to beat us, the mere fact that Bayern won’t play a low block means we have a chance.”

Arsenal’s Premier League form has been quite sensational, and heading into the quarter-finals against Bayern, it could now be time to crank up the pressure in the Champions League.

As Wright himself puts it, Porto’s game plan to frustrate Arsenal worked like a charm, yet it is something that the likes of Bayern will not do given their historic presence in the Champions League.

Teams who come out to attack could suit Arsenal better in this competition, and whilst 6-0 wins at this stage of the Champions League are unlikely, the Gunners could replicate their Premier League form in Europe.
