Ian Wright says Arteta will do deal for £20k-a-week ace Arsenal ‘blatantly’ need

Iconic former Arsenal striker Ian Wright has had his say on the Gunners’ proposed move for Ivan Toney.

According to The Daily Mail, Arsenal are considering launching a move to sign Brentford striker Ivan Toney in the upcoming January transfer window, with the Bees thought to want £80 million for the forward.

Toney himself is said to be keen on making the switch to the Emirates Stadium.

The 27-year-old is a proven commodity in the Premier League. He bagged twenty goals in the competition last season. He is the kind of prolific, predatory finisher that Mikel Arteta’s squad is currently lacking. 

There are risks associated with bringing Toney to Arsenal, given he is currently serving an eight-month ban for breaking rules surrounding betting regulations, and he will therefore be short of match sharpness when his able to return to action in January. 

If he were able to hit the ground running on his return though, then the £20,000-a-week attacker could have a huge impact on Arsenal’s season.

Wright backs Toney to take Arsenal to next level

Ian Wright, who scored 185 goals for the club in his playing days, would love to see the once-capped England international at Arsenal. Speaking on Stick to Football, Wright said, “I don’t think the Toney links will go away because it’s obvious for everyone to see that with that focal point, with the player who scores, that takes you somewhere else.”

The 59-year-old backed Arteta to get the deal done, saying, “it’s blatantly obvious for everyone to see that’s the last piece, and he’ll do it. If it can be done, he’ll do it.”

Arsenal will be aiming to go one step better than they managed last season, and actually win the Premier League title this time around. Having a reliable goalscorer to spearhead the attack will certainly make that task all the more achievable.

Arteta has clearly identified the need for another striker. Wright obviously believes that Toney is the right man for the job. Whether or not the Gunners go for the Brentford target man, though, remains to be seen.
