Ian Wright is one of the greatest players to ever play for Arsenal.

The legendary Englishman joined the Gunners from Crystal Palace for a then club-record £2.5 million. He hit the ground running and was one of the club’s best players.

Despite all the early success which saw Wright win the UEFA Cup Winners’ Cup, the FA Cup as well as the League Cup, his dream of winning the league title had not materialised.

One Arsenal player changed that, and Wright said he knew that would happen as soon as he saw him.

Ian Wright explains what he realised when Arsenal signed Dennis Bergkamp

Arsenal smashed their transfer record to sign Dennis Bergkamp for £7.5 million in 1995.

The Dutchman joined the Gunners from Inter Milan after a difficult spell in Italy, and he went on to become one of the greatest players to ever don the red and white.

Wright shared a fantastic relationship with Bergkamp. The two players played together in attack and were even roommates during away games.

They share a great bond even to this day, and Wright has revealed now that he ‘felt like a child’ when Arsenal signed Bergkamp because he knew big trophies were coming to Highbury.

Speaking at the FWA Awards where Bergkamp was honoured, Wright said: “I will never forget the way Dennis signed. I felt like a child.

“Because the way it worked for him and the way I tried to get into football, to finally end up hearing that Dennis Bergkamp is signing made me realise that I’m doing something right.

“Because I knew that when Dennis came, I’m probably going to win something.”

When everyone in attendance burst out laughing, Wright added: “Why you laughing at that? I genuinely thought that.”

Wright went on to say that Bergkamp was the best player he ever played with and also claimed that the Dutchman changed the DNA of Arsenal.

Dennis Bergkamp’s stats at Arsenal are incredible

Bergkamp spent 11 years at Arsenal and became a legend.

The Ice Man wasn’t always the main man, especially after Thierry Henry arrived, but even the great Frenchman has publicly claimed that Bergkamp was the best player he ever played with.

In 422 appearances for Arsenal, Bergkamp directly contributed to 235 goals, which is a stunning return for someone who mostly played behind the main striker.

Bergkamp also helped Arsenal win three Premier League titles, four FA Cups and three Community Shields, and played a huge part in all of those wins.

The Dutchman is one of the greatest players to ever grace the game, and we’re so glad he played for Arsenal and gave us all the memories that we have today.

Wright is right, Bergkamp changed Arsenal’s DNA!
