Ian Wright says one Arsenal player will become almost unstoppable if he’s just more consistent

Arsenal have a number of incredible players in their squad.

The Gunners have been one of the best teams in Europe over the last two seasons, and they are expected to challenge for the big trophies again this term.

Almost every player in Arsenal’s first-team squad is good enough to win games for them, but there are a few who have struggled with consistency in recent seasons.

Ian Wright has had his say on one of them.

Ian Wright says Gabriel Martinelli will be difficult to stop if he’s more consistent

Gabriel Martinelli has been at Arsenal since the summer of 2019.

The Brazilian joined the Gunners as an 18-year-old from Ituano in Brazil, and he had a tremendous debut season in the famous red and white.

Martinelli was then eased in over the next two campaigns under Mikel Arteta, and wasn’t always the first-choice starter.

In the 2022/23 season, however, the forward was sensational and went on to score 15 goals in the Premier League.

Then, Martinelli struggled for two seasons and didn’t get off to a great start in this campaign either. But over the last three games, he has looked really sharp.

Wright wanted to see the Brazilian start against Manchester City on Sunday. He has claimed that if Martinelli adds more consistency to his game, he will become nearly unstoppable.

He said on the Stick to Football podcast: “What I thought was and what we saw was Eze and Martinelli.

“Especially Martinelli in this kind of form, because we’d like to see him be more consistent continually, because if he were, he would be electric and very, very difficult to stop.

“I thought that he would’ve given more than Trossard, and I thought Eze would’ve probably given more than, as we saw in the end, more than Merino.”

Mikel Arteta has to make one change to help Gabriel Martinelli explode

Martinelli is a tremendous talent – there is no debate there.

The Brazilian is rapid, a good dribbler, and his finishing, as we saw against Athletic Club and Manchester City, is excellent as well.

Martinelli’s goals both came from central runs, which tells you that he is so much more effective when he is given opportunities through the middle.

At Arsenal, he is often asked to stay wide and hold the width, which does not maximise his skillset and ability.

We really want to see Arteta give Martinelli more opportunities in central areas in the coming months.
