Legendary former Arsenal striker Ian Wright reached out to one player on social media after the Gunners overcame Porto.
Martin Odegaard played an instrumental role in guiding Arsenal to their first Champions League final in 14 years on Tuesday evening.
The Norwegian playmaker produced something of a midfield masterclass against Porto at the Emirates Stadium. In the midst of a difficult and often scrappy game, the Arsenal club captain remained a beacon of calm, and also led by example on the pitch.
For ninety minutes, and then throughout extra-time, the former Real Madrid man ran relentlessly. He directed and spearheaded the Arsenal press throughout the game, constantly sprinting to pressurise and harry opposition players on the ball.
When in possession himself, he was typically classy. Odegaard was hailed for his exquisite assist for Leandro Trossard’s first half goal, which levelled up this round of 16 tie on aggregate.
When the time came for a penalty shootout, Odegaard stepped up to take the first one, and dispatched it confidently. Mikel Arteta will have had full faith in the 25-year-old in this moment.

Ian Wright and Edu send messages to Martin Odegaard after Porto heroics
Following his penalty saving exploits, David Raya was at the heart of the Arsenal celebrations after the match was eventually won, but Odegaard played an equally important role in this triumph.
In the wake of this victory, the 55-cap Norway international took to Instagram to send a message to the Arsenal supporters. He said, “So proud of this team! Another beautiful night at The Emirates. Can’t thank you enough for the support we get. Absolutely amazing. Thank you!”
Arsenal sporting director Edu responded to this post, as did the likes of KSI and Fabrizio Romano. Ian Wright was another to tip his hat to Odegaard. The former all-time Arsenal leading goalscorer said, “We are all right behind you Skip. Brilliant tonight.” Wright’s sentiments will surely now be echoed by all Arsenal fans the world over.
