Ian Wright was so ‘pleased’ for one Arsenal star in dig at Nottingham Forest fans

Arsenal legend Ian Wright has now hailed Bukayo Saka after he drew the ire of Nottingham Forest fans.

Bukayo Saka provided the match-winning goal as Arsenal battled to a 2-1 victory against Nottingham Forest at the City Ground on Tuesday evening.

The Hale End academy graduate has not been at his usual brilliant best in recent weeks. He had only netted once in his previous seven Premier League outings, before making his vital contribution against the Midlands outfit.

The Nottingham Forest fans were on Saka’s back throughout the match, booing and jeering his every touch, in an effort to put the Gunners’ talismanic winger off. They will not have been pleased to see the England man rediscover his goalscoring touch on the banks of the river Trent.

Saka is used to being targeted in such a fashion, if not always by supporters, then by opposition defenders, who habitually afford him extra attention. Saka has spoken out about the challenge that this presents.

Equally, Arsenal and Mikel Arteta have not always been best pleased with the treatment that the 22-year-old attacker receives on the pitch. Earlier this season, the north London club lodged a formal complaint to PGMOL over the lack of protection from referees that Saka is given.

Having seen the player face the brunt of the Nottingham Forest fans’ derision, Ian Wright was delighted to see him respond in such an emphatic fashion. Speaking to Premier League Productions, the former striker said, “I was quite pleased with this [Saka’s goal] because for some reason Forest fans were booing him. So I was quite pleased.”

Saka certainly took his goal well. Receiving the ball from Gabriel Jesus, who had earlier opened the scoring for the Gunners, he used his right foot to angle the ball past former Arsenal goalkeeper Matt Turner and into the bottom corner.

Arsenal now need him to put together a run of good form. The Gunners are taking on current league leaders Liverpool next time out, and will need Saka to be at his best if they are to get anything from that crucial match.

So far this season, across all competitions, Saka has contributed 10 goals and 13 assists in 29 appearances. He is a special player, and when firing on all cylinders he has the capacity to lead Arsenal to major success.
