Arsenal are expected to challenge Liverpool for the Premier League title once again this season.

Arne Slot’s side were too good last season as they ran away with the Premier League and had a ten point margin come the end of the year.

Mikel Arteta knows that gap must be closed this season and is hoping new acquisitions such as Viktor Gyokeres and Martin Zubimendi can help do that.

There is a real rivalry beginning to bubble between the two sides and Jamie Carragher has just revealed that one Liverpool star once wanted to sign for the Gunners.

Jamie Carragher admits Luis Suarez wanted to sign for Arsenal in 2013

Speaking on the latest episode of ‘The Overlap’, former Liverpool defender Carragher has admitted that Luis Suarez wanted to join Arsenal back in the summer of 2013.

Arsenal tried to sign Suarez with a bid of £40m + £1, believing they were triggering a release clause in the Uruguayan’s contract.

However, that was then found not to be the case and Liverpool refused to sell their star striker, When comparing Suarez with the current Alexander Isak situation, Carragher admitted Suarez wanted the move.

Carragher stated: “We had a situation at Liverpool with Suarez when he wanted to go to Arsenal, the next season he had the best season of his life.”

As per the Daily Mail, former Liverpool boss Brendan Rogers labelled Suarez as ‘incredible’ the following season where he won the player of the year award.

Suarez’s agent got the release clause wrong and ultimately the relationship between the two clubs soured and a deal was not struck.

Arsenal fans have had many near misses in terms of transfer targets over the years, former transfer chief Richard Law revealed Arsenal agreed a fee for Karim Benzema that summer but chose to sign Mesut Ozil instead.

Arsenal hope to have their own Luis Suarez this season in Viktor Gyokeres

One of the main differences between Arsenal and Liverpool last season was the attacking firepower that both clubs held.

Liverpool had players such as Mohamed Salah and Cody Gakpo in incredible form throughout the campaign and Arsenal had a number of injuries to their front line.

The signing of Gyokeres alongside Noni Madueke will give Arsenal fans hope that they can help bridge that gap between the two sides and prevent the Gunners from dropping needless points.

Arteta’s side drew 14 games last season in the league and if they can improve even half of that this campaign, those extra points could prove pivotal in the race.
