Jamie Carragher claims that people were suggesting Viktor Gyokeres was not at the level to play for a top-class team, and that sentiment is coming true at Arsenal.

There have been big question marks over Gyokeres’ performances at Arsenal this season, with the striker netting just six goals in 19 matches.

On the weekend, at home to Wolves, Gyokeres really struggled, as he managed fewer touches than any player on the pitch and had just one attempt at goal.

What is Viktor Gyokeres’ biggest weakness right now? 😬

What must Mikel Arteta work on with the Swede in training?

Now, Carragher has been having his say on the striker position at Arsenal and has issued a rather scathing assessment of the Swede’s time in N5.

Jamie Carragher is unsure whether Viktor Gyokeres is good enough for Arsenal

Jamie Carragher thinks that Viktor Gyokeres is going to struggle to become Arsenal’s first-choice striker, and he even has question marks as to whether he’s even good enough.

It was a decisive week in the Arsenal career of Gyokeres, and he failed miserably, with two poor performances against Club Brugge and Wolves.

The 27-year-old really needed to step up and prove his worth, but ultimately, it’s clear that Mikel Merino is ahead of him right now.

When asked about the Swede, Carragher told Sky Sports: “The word on the street before he came to the Premier League was that ‘we’re not sure whether he’s at the level of a really top European club’, which is what Arsenal are – one of the best teams in Europe.

“I think even though it’s early in his Arsenal reign, you can see where that sentiment was coming from. I actually think it’s going to be tough for Gyokeres to be the first-choice Arsenal striker.”

Who should start as Arsenal’s striker when everyone is fit?

Arsenal have Viktor Gyokeres, Kai Havertz, Gabriel Jesus and Mikel Merino capable of playing up front. Who do you think should start when everyone is fit? Click on ‘comment’ below and let us know!

Now, with Gabriel Jesus back from injury and Kai Havertz soon set to join him, Gyokeres could actually find himself as the Gunners’ fourth-choice striker.

Jesus looked a real handful when he came on against Wolves, and his movement even forced the equaliser from Bukayo Saka’s deflected cross.

Meanwhile, Merino has been in great form this season for Arteta’s team and cannot be overlooked in the big matches.
