Jamie Carragher has shared a bizarre assumption about Arsenal midfielder Declan Rice.
Ahead of the Gunners’ trip to Anfield to face Liverpool, Carragher spoke to Sky Sports about the Gunners.
The Liverpool icon hasn’t been afraid to share his opinion on Mikel Arteta’s project before, and was quick to shed light on one narrative he believes could soon creep in.
Arsenal fans are already unhappy with Carragher, who recently made an astonishing remark about Ruben Amorim and Arteta, with his latest comments just as perplexing.

Jamie Carragher makes ridiculous Declan Rice prediction
Gary Neville and Carragher were the headliners in Sky Sports’ coverage of Arsenal vs Liverpool at Anfield.
Ahead of the clash, the latter opened up about Declan Rice, sharing his opinion that the 2023 signing will soon get cold feet at the Emirates.
Discussing how another trophyless season has impacted the Arsenal squad, Carragher made the following assumption.
“In terms of Declan, I think he’s been Arsenal’s best player this season. I’m not saying he’d give it another 12 months, but I think those doubts may kick in in another 12 months.”
The former Premier League defender predicts that Rice and other members of Arteta’s starting XI will grow tired of waiting for silverware if trophies are not soon won.
What is perhaps most fascinating about Carragher’s claims is that the pundit could not be more wrong, as Rice insisted himself only a few weeks ago.
Speaking to TNT Sports after Arsenal’s win over Real Madrid at the Bernabeu, the former West Ham captain explained the feeling of an ‘upward trajectory’ around the club.
“I sensed it before I signed for the club that we were on an upward trajectory as a club. I felt it in the players we’ve got and the direction we want to go in.
“It’s been tough in the Premier League because last year we lost out by a point. This year, it’s slipped away from us,” Rice said.
The England international went on to explain how he and his teammates ‘fully believe’ and trust in Arteta’s project.
“We all fully believe it, and we have full trust in this manager; he’s unbelievable.”
Unless Rice’s view on Arteta and his commitment to Arsenal has changed since the Champions League quarter-final, Carragher has been left red-faced.
Carragher is right about Rice being Arsenal’s player of the season
Opinion or not, Carragher’s assessment of Rice is incorrect however, one part of his explanation was more factual.
The Sky Sports pundit believes that the 26-year-old has been Arsenal’s player of the season, a statement that many would agree with.
| Appearances | Goals | Assists | Starts | Minutes |
| 50 | 8 | 10 | 46 | 3948 |
Having played 3,948 minutes of action over the 2024/25 calendar, Rice has very rarely recorded a below-par performance, which is astonishing.
Aside from his weekly heroics, the Englishman continues to grow offensively, racking up 18 goal contributions in all competitions, including his two sensational free kick goals against Real Madrid.
When Arsenal have needed inspiration, Rice has been there often above anyone else, making his claim to player of the season rather strong.
