Arsenal are beaming with pride having handed Max Dowman his Premier League debut.
In 2022, Mikel Arteta handed Ethan Nwaneri his Premier League debut at the age of 15, repeating the feat three years later with Dowman.
During Arsenal’s 5-0 thrashing of Leeds United, Dowman was introduced mid-way through the second half to get a taste of football in the top flight.
What was alarming is that the 2009-born star didn’t look remotely out of place; in fact, he performed better than some of Arsenal’s wingers have in recent months.

Jamie Carragher says there’s a ‘downside’ to Max Dowman’s breakthrough
Even before he kicked a ball in the Premier League, Dowman was compared to Lionel Messi.
Having seen the 15-year-old against players twice his age, it’s understandable why he’s being rated so highly.
Though everything regarding the Hale End product’s future is joyous, pundit Jamie Carragher has raised one ‘downside’ about his rise.
When speaking on Sky Sports News, Carragher noted that Arsenal have young players shining in the same position.
“The problem Arsenal have got at the moment, you look at those young players, the best players, they play the same position,” Carragher said.
“You have Saka, you have him, you have Nwaneri, that’s probably the only downside.”
Just like Nwaneri, Dowman is best deployed in central attacking midfield but is also playable on the right wing.
Against Leeds, the youngster starred on the right, just as Nwaneri did last season when covering for Bukayo Saka.
Arsenal’s attacking options compared to last season
After last season, if there’s one problem Arteta will want to have, it’s having too many players to choose from.
| 2024/25 | 2025/26 |
| Kai Havertz | Kai Havertz |
| Gabriel Jesus | Gabriel Jesus |
| Bukayo Saka | Bukayo Saka |
| Gabriel Martinelli | Gabriel Martinelli |
| Leandro Trossard | Leandro Trossard |
| Martin Odegaard | Martin Odegaard |
| Ethan Nwaneri | Ethan Nwaneri |
| Raheem Sterling | Eberechi Eze |
| Viktor Gyokeres | |
| Noni Madueke | |
| Max Dowman |
Dowman gives the Arsenal manager another figure to lean on, something that wasn’t there in quality last season.
When assessing Arsenal’s attacking options last season compared to this term, it’s clear to see the step forward the Gunners have taken to get closer to major silverware.
Now armed with a squad brimming with talent and options, Arteta has all the tools he needs to win big in N5, something Dowman could be a part of.
