Jamie Carragher says he would be absolutely ’embarrassed’ if he was one Arsenal player right now

Arsenal are set to finish second in the Premier League for the third season in a row.

The Gunners began this campaign with the dream of winning the title, but injuries to many key players have really hurt them over the last few months.

The fact that Mikel Arteta has led this side to a second-place finish and to the semi-finals of the Champions League deserves enormous credit considering the circumstances.

The players should be praised a lot too – many have had to play more games than they should’ve because of injuries to their teammates.

Jamie Carragher has now delivered his verdict on one Arsenal player who has had a few issues lately.

Jamie Carragher says he’d be ’embarrassed’ if he was Arsenal star William Saliba right now

William Saliba is one of Arsenal’s best players.

The Frenchman has been unbelievable for most of the last three seasons, and he has played a big part in helping the Gunners challenge for the big trophies.

Saliba’s partnership with Gabriel Magalhaes is arguably the best in the world, but Arsenal’s defence just doesn’t look the same if one of them is absent.

Over the last few weeks, Saliba has made some mistakes at the back. Carragher believes Gabriel’s absence is the reason for those errors.

Furthermore, the former Liverpool defender claimed that he would be ’embarrassed’ if someone told him that he wasn’t the same without his partner.

He said on the Stick to Football podcast: “I said something the other day, It was after the Liverpool-Arsenal game, and Saliba as a centre back – I love him. I’m not classing him as a fringe player. He’s a brilliant player.

“But, he never quite looks the same when Gabriel is not alongside him. I don’t know if that’s maybe just the games I’ve seen, and I actually said that after the game.

“Me, as a player, I think we’re probably all the same — if someone said to me, ‘oh, you don’t look the same player when he’s not playing’, I’d be like, oh, I’d almost be embarrassed.”

William Saliba should not listen to Jamie Carragher

Saliba will be the first one to admit that he hasn’t been great recently.

The Frenchman has made a few mistakes, and not having Gabriel around may well have caused those issues because the two players share an incredible relationship.

However, what Carragher is completely ignoring is the fact that Saliba is still only 23 years old. He has played almost every game over the last three seasons, and he has been near-perfect more often than not.

Everybody makes mistakes – even the most experienced ones. Carragher made plenty in his career himself, and he wasn’t even half as good as Saliba is right now.

The Arsenal number two has no reason to be embarrassed. The last person Saliba should be listening to is Carragher, who just speaks for the sake of it these days.
