Arsenal’s impressive victory over Liverpool on Sunday caused a storm in the media, as Jamie Carragher accused Mikel Arteta’s side of over-celebrating.
Martin Odegaard in particular was called out after enjoying the aftermath of the crucial victory with club photographer Stuart MacFarlane, and Carragher was thoroughly unimpressed with the Arsenal captain, claiming that the Norweigan should have headed straight down the tunnel despite impressing as his former side were beaten.
Fans have been quick to point out Carragher’s hypocrisy, given how much Jurgen Klopp has passionately celebrated Liverpool victories over the years, and there has been plenty of focus on his comments in recent days.
Jamie Carragher takes further swipe at Arsenal
Just when the needless storm over Arsenal’s celebrations appeared to be coming to an end, Carragher has now fired another shot at the Gunners, who moved within 2 points of Liverpool with their victory.
Responding to a picture posted on X by the official Champions League account, of Carragher celebrating with the trophy, he appeared to have a dig at Arsenal.
“The right time to celebrate!” he posted in response.
Jamie Carragher’s comments over Arsenal celebrations

Carragher’s comments at the time did not resonate well with Arsenal fans, who accused him of being bitter after his former side were deservedly beaten.
The day after the game, Carragher pointed out how Arsenal’s strong defence in the Liverpool clash showed that they could win the title, and this excellent analysis raised further questions about why he resorted to such juvenile analysis at full-time.
His swipe now will have done him no favours amongst Arsenal fans, and they will now be closely monitoring his reaction to any future Liverpool celebrations that may take place before the end of the season.
It is clear that Carragher rates Arteta and his side highly, even urging Arsenal to hand their manager a new contract as a matter of urgency.
Part of the way Arteta has successfully rebuilt Arsenal into title contenders since becoming manager in 2019 has been through creating a connection between the players and fans, and moments like the aftermath of the Liverpool victory are ones which should be celebrated and praised.
For Carragher to criticise Odegaard in that moment, despite it reflecting a similar culture to what Klopp has created at Liverpool, contradicts his previous praise of Arteta. The Spaniard’s coaching, results and celebrations all go hand in hand, and the connection with the fans has been a necessary part of his reign at the club.
