Former Arsenal goalkeeper Jens Lehmann has suggested that Mikel Arteta may need to “change his personality” to help the club win trophies.

It comes as the Gunners sit on the brink of another potential trophyless season, with some struggles across all competitions.

Liverpool have been crowned as Premier League champions, with Arsenal on course to finish second for a third season in a row.

In the Champions League, the semi-final stage is underway, and PSG lead Arsenal 1-0 after the first leg at the Emirates Stadium, with work to be done at the Parc des Princes.

The North London outfit will have to create more history to overcome the French giants at their home ground, leaving them in a vulnerable position.

Should they be knocked out in the next week, then Mikel Arteta is looking at another season without adding something to the Arsenal trophy cabinet.

Jens Lehmann questions Mikel Arteta’s personality amid Arsenal trophy wait

Arsenal’s last trophy came under Mikel Arteta in 2020, winning the FA Cup in the early days of the head coach.

In the time since, the Gunners have built themselves to be an even better team, but silverware has simply eluded them.

While there is still some hope that the Champions League could be lifted, it will take an almighty turnaround.

Following the defeat to PSG, former goalkeeper Jens Lehmann has been discussing the job done by Arteta with the side.

Speaking on TalkSPORT, he said: “Obviously, he has to win next year. This year, they could have won [the Premier League], Man City dropped a little bit, Liverpool replaced them.

“Next year, he has to win, but he probably needs to change his personality a little bit to win things, because sometimes, it’s [about] control and being cautious.

“But if you want to win some things, in my opinion, you could be a little more risky. But that’s next year – next week is super important, I cross my fingers that they will score two goals and will not concede one.”

It puts pressure back onto the Arsenal manager to land some of the biggest trophies while expectations continue to rise.

Arsenal struggles in big moments not helping in trophy hunt

While Arsenal are clearly good enough to win something, they simply haven’t had the big moments swing in their favour.

Mikel Arteta’s semi-final problems are evident, with the side struggling to get past the final four in recent competitions.

Meanwhile, in the league, things have been difficult as the team gets so close, yet so far in their hunt for the title.

The controlled nature of Arne Slot and his Liverpool team this season may provide a blueprint for how to manage the season as a whole.

It remains to be seen if that is possible, though, with Arteta always looking to bring the maximum out on the touchline.
