John Terry verdict on Declan Rice red card

There has been plenty of controversy surrounding the sending off of Arsenal star Declan Rice in the clash with Brighton.

The England international was handed a yellow card earlier in the match before he was given a second booking for delaying a free-kick.

It baffled many, not least due to Joao Pedro not being booked during the same match for a similar offence.

Former Chelsea captain John Terry even joined in on the side of the Gunners, taking to social media to say: “Worst decision EVER.”

It means Rice will now be missing for Arsenal’s North London Derby clash against Tottenham, coming as a huge blow to the side.

Why Sam Tickle turned down Arsenal transfer

Arsenal spent most of the summer transfer window on the lookout for goalkeeper signings who could make a difference to the side.

David Raya signed permanently from Brentford following last season’s loan spell, while Tommy Setford joined the ranks.

Aaron Ramsdale left the side to join Southampton, with the experienced Neto joining on loan to provide backup.

There was also a late attempt at landing a promising young option for the future, with Joan Garcia on the shortlist.

So too was Wigan goalkeeper Sam Tickle, who ended up snubbing a move to the Emirates Stadium over the summer.

According to The Sun, the 22-year-old turned down the opportunity as he didn’t want to drop out of a starting role.

The shot-stopper has been the first choice for the Latics ever since he broke into the first team.

Russell Martin on Aaron Ramsdale to Southampton

Aaron Ramsdale left Arsenal over the summer to join Southampton in the hopes of earning more game time away from the club.

The goalkeeper fell down the pecking order over the last year, with the incoming David Raya taking that place at his expense.

With that switch to the Saints, it represents some good business from the Gunners and potentially for his new club too.

Discussing his debut in a 3-0 loss to Brentford, Southampton boss Russell Martin said: “I thought he was really good.

“Even in the second half, the ball was getting put back to him too much because we were 2-0 down and at 3-0 definitely… He stuck to it and he’s going to be amazing.

“I think we’ll all fall in love with him very quickly because of who he is, the person he is, how brave he is. He’s got big character. So I think he’s going to be a brilliant signing for us.”

It remains to be seen whether Arsenal will regret letting the goalkeeper go in the months and years ahead.
