Arsenal fans were amazed at midfielder Jorginho during last week’s defeat to Aston Villa, after he was seen giving his teammates instructions from the touchline.

Mikel Arteta had to watch the game from the stands as he served a touchline ban, but his presence on the touchline was replaced by Jorginho, as the midfielder was an unused substitute.

The Italian was spotted giving instructions to goalkeeper David Raya in an unusual move, which also saw the goalkeeper run to the touchline to speak to him.

Jorginho has now lifted the lid on what he said to the under-fire goalkeeper during the defeat.

Jorginho shares David Raya touchline conversation

Speaking to The Guardian, the defensive midfielder explained why he was so vocal on the touchline, and revealed what he told the Spaniard.

“There was a ball David tried to play on the right side and I told him to play on the left because that’s what we trained before,” Jorginho stated.

“I called to him and we couldn’t hear each other properly and then he came over to have this chat and clear it up.”

Arsenal lost the game 1-0 courtesy of an early goal from John McGinn, but were otherwise dominant as they failed to take their chances in a frustrating defeat.

Arteta recently described Jorginho as the most intelligent player he has ever worked with, and his conversation with Raya has showcased this well.

The Italy International reads the game superbly, and he has performed well at the base of midfield for the most part despite his physical limitations.

Jorginho arrived from Chelsea in the last winter window, and has proven to be an outstanding addition to the dressing room, and he is someone who can comfortably rotate with Declan Rice, or even play alongside him.

Raya has struggled at times since his arrival from Brentford in the summer, and part of the reason he has usurped Aaron Ramsdale was in theory, because of his long-kicking.

Jorginho is clearly trying to support the goalkeeper, who has come in for heavy criticism after making several high-profile errors, and Raya was clearly eager to receive his instructions.

The 31-year-old is out of contract at the end of the season, but given his leadership off the pitch as well as his usefulness on it, it would not be a surprise if Arteta offered him an extension.
