Kai Havertz just did what only Mesut Ozil and one other star managed for Arsenal

After a tough start to his Arsenal career, Kai Havertz is beginning to find his feet, and he has now scored twice in his last two games.

A last-minute winner against Brentford seemed to spark Havertz into life, who then opened the scoring in Arsenal’s incredible 6-0 victory over RC Lens last night.

It was his third goal of the season, after a penalty against Bournemouth and his header vs Brentford, as he tapped in beyond Brice Samba following an excellent header from Gabriel Jesus.

It was his first Champions League goal for the club, and his first since scoring for Chelsea against Borussia Dortmund in March last season.

Kai Havertz’s Champions League goals

Havertz’s strike against Lens made him just the third German goalscorer in Arsenal’s Champions League history, after Lukas Podolski and Mesut Ozil.

Podolski scored eight times in 12 Champions League games between 2012 and 2015, including two knockout round strikes against Bayern Munich, whilst Ozil scored seven times in 28 matches, which included a hattrick against Ludogorets, and goals against Bayern and Napoli.

Whilst Havertz has a long way to go to catch both players up, he has now officially joined them as German Champions League goalscorers.

Arsenal have had a number of German stars over the years, but a lot of them were defensive players.

Goalkeeper Jens Lehmann was a crucial part of the Invincibles side, whilst defender Per Mertesacker retired at the club and is now the head of the Hale End Academy.

In recent years Arsenal have had Bernd Leno and Shkodran Mustafi. Whilst Leno was a solid performer for most of his time at the club, Mustafi arrived for a big fee as a World Cup winner, and proved to be a disastrous buy.

Mustafi, Mertesacker, Podolski and Ozil were a part of the Germany squad which won the World Cup in 2014, with Ozil starting in every game.

Havertz is a Germany international now, and recently scored for his country whilst playing out of position at left-back.

Other German former Gunners include Bayern Munich star Serge Gnabry, who came through Arsenal’s academy, fellow academy midfielder Thomas Eisfeld, defenders Moritz Voltz and Stefan Malz, and Alberto Mendez, all of whom hardly featured for the club, but some did find success elsewhere.

Arsenal have also been linked with Borussia Dortmund star Julian Brandt, whom Havertz has praised in the past, but a move may be some way off as things stand.
