Kai Havertz led the line for Arsenal as they recorded a 5-1 win over Sporting CP in a Champions League clash on Tuesday evening.

The Gunners were at their free flowing best, particularly in the first half, against the reigning Portuguese champions.

Whilst Martin Odegaard was the star of the show for Arsenal, Bukayo Saka, Gabriel Martinelli, and Gabriel Magalhaes all also impressed.

Kai Havertz was able to get on the scoresheet in the first half, and caused problems for the hosts throughout with his physicality and intelligent movement.

Kai Havertz scored 100th goal vs Sporting

Mikel Arteta’s side have struggled for goals at times this season, and Havertz is not the most prolific of forwards. As such, the Gunners are in the market for a new striker. Arsenal have even had an approach for Sporting CP star Viktor Gyokeres knocked back

However, Havertz was able to reach a personal goalscoring milestone in this Champions League clash, as his strike against Sporting marked the 25-year-old’s 100th club goal of this career.

Havertz matched an Arsenal goalscoring record set by Robin van Persie earlier this season, and has been delivering for the club so far this season.

What Arsenal gain and lose with Havertz

Arteta will be delighted with the job that Havertz does for this Arsenal team – which extends far beyond goalscoring.

The Germany international is relied upon to provide a focal point. He competes fiercely in his duels, creates space for teammates with intelligent movement, and chips in defensively too.

However, he will never be the most prolific of strikers, and there is certainly an argument that in order to get to the next level, Arsenal will need to add a truly elite finisher to their ranks.

Arteta will certainly want to sign such a forward in the upcoming January transfer window. If the Spanish coach can make a signing in that mould, he will have to reassess how Havertz fits into this Arsenal team.
