Former Arsenal star Granit Xhaka has been a standout performer at Euro 2024, after thriving at Bayer Leverkusen.

Xhaka enjoyed an outstanding final season at Arsenal before departing for Germany, and he since helped Xabi Alonso’s side win a historic undefeated league and cup double, whilst also reaching the Europa League final.

The 31-year-old has excelled at Euro 2024, helping Switzerland reach the quarter-finals after an outstanding performance in their victory over Italy, and they will now face England.

Xhaka is set to come up against a familiar face in Bukayo Saka, who recently praised his former teammate, and will also face Declan Rice, who replaced him at Arsenal.

However, Switzerland were handed a worry as Xhaka emerged as an injury doubt over an issue with his adductor, and he has now been handed an update.

It has now been reported by journalist Jordan Davies that Xhaka has fought off an injury scare, and will be fit to play against England in the quarter-final clash on Saturday 6th July.

“Granit Xhaka WILL be fit to face England after a scan on an adductor problem. He will train individually from the Swiss squad today but expected to start against the Three Lions this weekend,” he posted on X.

A key battle in the upcoming quarter-final clash between England and Switzerland will be in midfield as Xhaka faces Rice.

Both enjoyed incredible debut seasons with their new clubs, but whilst Xhaka continued that form at the Euros, Rice suffered a shaky start to the tournament.

His passing at the base of midfield has been criticised, but Rice did put in an improved display in the victory over Slovakia.

Both players have appeared as a number six under Mikel Arteta, and both found their performances improved when pushed into more advanced roles. Whilst Rice may bring more defensive solidity and physicality, Xhaka is perhaps the better passer, and the clash between the two will be an intriguing one for Arsenal fans.

Arteta is keen to add a new midfielder to his squad, and Xhaka may yet again show Arsenal that they are missing a player with his ability on the ball.
