Kieran Tierney’s former teammate challenges him to do ‘fantastic’ thing at Arsenal before Celtic return

Kieran Tierney is still on the books at Arsenal but he has not played for the club in nearly 18 months, and an exit seems inevitable.

Tierney spent last season on loan at Real Sociedad in La Liga but his injury problems continued, with the Basque side deciding against signing him permanently.

The Scotland international has been recovering from an injury he picked up at Euro 2024, but Tierney recently returned to full training at Arsenal, with it still unclear whether he will be included in a matchday squad again.

A return to Celtic has been mooted for Tierney, but his former teammate and captain Scott Brown has now claimed that he still has unfinished business at Arsenal before he can think about returning to Glasgow.

Scott Brown challenges Kieran Tierney to win Premier League at Arsenal

Speaking via Football Scotland, Brown claimed that whilst he would love to see Tierney return to Celtic, he believes he has the ability to make a return to the Arsenal first-team squad.

“He is at Arsenal now and he obviously wants to go back and play games. It’s up to him what he does and where he goes,” he stated.

“If he was ever to come back it would be unbelievable. But he’s got to focus on Arsenal and get back into that team.”

Brown then claimed that Mikel Arteta’s Arsenal side have enough quality to win the Premier League, and encouraged Tierney to fight for his place.

“They’re a fantastic team as well. He could go and win the Premier League with them. When he first got into the team, they loved him,” he added.

“He’s still only 27. I’d like to see him do something like win the Premier League.”

Could Kieran Tierney play for Arsenal again?

Tierney was once seen as a player who could eventually become Arsenal’s captain, but a number of factors stopped him succeeding at Arsenal.

Injuries were a key issue, but Arteta’s insistence on playing with inverted fullbacks meant that Tierney became a poor tactical fit at Arsenal.

The arrival of Oleksandr Zinchenko spelled disaster for Tierney in 2022, and with Riccardo Calafiori and, Jakub Kiwior and Jurrien Timber also joining since, Tierney has fallen well down the pecking order at the Emirates Stadium.

If Tierney was to build up his fitness at Arsenal, he could push for minutes in the EFL Cup as a backup, but any significant game time in North London can almost certainly be ruled out for the 27-year-old, and a return to Celtic could see him rebuild his career.
