Arsenal’s preparation for the Champions League clash with Real Madrid wasn’t ideal over the weekend as they took to the Premier League once again.

The Gunners were held to a draw with Brentford, as Thomas Partey’s opener was cancelled out by Yoane Wissa’s strike.

The difficult result for Arsenal was only added to as Thomas Partey and Jorginho became injury concerns alongside a fresh knock for Ben White.

While it wasn’t ideal preparation, Arsenal hold a 3-0 lead over Real Madrid that will give them plenty of hope before taking them on in the second leg of the Champions League quarter-finals.

The Gunners didn’t have the best weekend before the clash, but neither did Los Blancos star Kylian Mbappe.

Kylian Mbappe shown red card in Alaves vs Real Madrid

While Arsenal were held to a draw against Brentford, with one eye on the midweek Champions League clash, their opposition played one day later.

Real Madrid did request a change to La Liga over a switch to their fixture with Alaves, but it was denied and gave the side less rest by a day.

With Los Blancos also involved in a title race, it was imperative that they picked up three points, and they started well.

Eduardo Camavinga, who is banned from facing Arsenal in midweek, made amends for his red card in the first leg by scoring the opener against Alaves.

Moments later, though, the match got tougher as Kylian Mbappe was under review by VAR due to a challenge he made.

The Frenchman connected on a high tackle with force on the leg of the opposition, prompting a change in decision to give him a red card.

It was a nightmare return to action for Mbappe after a relatively quiet evening at the Emirates Stadium last time out.

Ian Wright claimed Mbappe’s miss against Arsenal in the match was crucial to the tie going the way of the Gunners.

While it wasn’t an ideal time for him, it may give him the motivation to put things right in the Champions League.

The 26-year-old has seven goals and one assist in 13 Champions League matches this season, scoring at a rate better than one every two matches.

After blanking in the previous tie, there will be an opportunity for him to add even more to his tally for the campaign.

Mbappe has a history of scoring big goals as part of a comeback, which could see him be the talisman for Real Madrid to do so this week coming.
