Lee Dixon has revealed what Arsenal legend Alan Smith has been saying about Viktor Gyokeres behind the scenes.

Smith is one of Arsenal’s best-ever goal scorers, finding the net 115 times for the Gunners in 343 appearances.

The Englishman falls just outside of Arsenal’s all-time top ten goalscorers, but his impact in North London stands for far more than merely making the executive list.

During his time at Highbury, Smith won five major trophies and collected two Golden Boots, which is why when he comments on strikers of today’s era, people tend to listen.

Lee Dixon reveals what Alan Smith really thinks about Viktor Gyokeres

When it comes to discourse about goal-scoring at Arsenal, one man is taking centre stage, and that is Viktor Gyokeres.

Arsenal signed Gyokeres for £63m in the summer transfer window and are starting to see the results of paying big money for the former Sporting CP marksman.

After the Gunners’ win over Burnley, Lee Dixon spoke highly of the striker, where he revealed what Smith honestly thinks of Arsenal’s summer signing.

“I asked Alan Smith, one of the great Arsenal centre forwards that’s ever been, and I asked him what he thought of him,” Dixon told NBC Sports.

“He gave a glowing report about his movement, his strength, and he said he will get goals because he puts himself in a position to; he’s a good finisher as well.”

Though some think that Arsenal overpaid for Gyokeres, the Swede is starting to rewrite the headlines, with things falling into place for the 27-year-old in Mikel Arteta’s squad.

It’s unsurprising to hear that Gyokeres has admirers from Arsenal legends, as the summer arrival continues to go from strength to strength alongside his new teammates.

The reason why it’s unsurprising that Smith likes Gyokeres

What is equally unsurprising is that Smith is a fan of Gyokeres, as there are similarities between the £63m man and the Arsenal icon.

Smith left Arsenal having scored over a century of goals in red and white, but things weren’t always so easy for the Englishman.

That’s why Smith can perhaps relate to Gyokeres’ start, as in his first season, he scored five goals in his opening ten league games, with the Swede’s record similar, having netted four in ten.

Smith ended his first season at Arsenal with 11 goals in the top-flight, a tally that Gyokeres will be desperate to eclipse as the Gunners eye the Premier League title.
