Arsenal have confirmed the signing of Riccardo Calafiori, which has sent shockwaves through Italy as one of their biggest talents has left Serie A.

Calafiori enjoyed an exceptional campaign with Bologna, helping them qualify for the Champions League, and was a standout performer for Italy at Euro 2024.

Arsenal beat competition from Juventus to sign the 22-year-old, who has now linked up with his International teammate Jorginho in North London.

Legendary Italian defender Leonardo Bonucci has now given his verdict on the signing, and Arsenal fans will be excited to hear why he is annoyed that Calafiori chose to depart Serie A in favour of playing for Mikel Arteta.

Speaking to The Athletic, Bonucci highlighted Calafiori’s qualities and claimed that he is set to be a key player for Italy, but lamented the fact that he is no longer playing in Serie A.

“Riccardo is different from the other defenders,” Bonucci stated.

“He’s good on the ball. He’s got character and likes to step into midfield. We’re exporting a great player. In my opinion, he’s going to be a reference point for our national team for the next 15 years.”

Bonucci established himself as a legend for Juventus and Italy over the course of his career, with a brief spell at AC Milan, and alongside Andrea Barzagli and Giorgio Chiellini, formed one of the greatest defences in Serie A history.

Italian defenders have always been renowned for their rugged, no-nonsense defending, with Bonucci praised over the years for the influence he had at the back.

Calafiori has the potential to emulate some Italian greats of the past, but what stands out is his ability on the ball. His outstanding dribbling and passing sets him apart from other centre-backs, and it is expected that he will play at left-back under Arteta.

The feeling in Italy is that Calafiori will be a huge loss for the league, but they will hope that he continues to flourish at Arsenal as it is expected that he will be the next leader of the National Team for years to come.
