The Arsenal goalkeeper debate is still rumbling on, with Sunderland shot-stopper Anthony Patterson now part of the conversation.
Arsenal are currently thought to be weighing up a move for Sunderland goalkeeper Anthony Patterson.
The 23-year-old has caught the eye for the Black Cats this season, having truly established himself between the sticks for the Championship outfit in the previous campaign. He already has over 100 senior club appearances under his belt, which is an impressive tally to have racked up for a goalkeeper of his age.
Patterson is certainly a talented player, and may well be on the radar of a number of top flight clubs at this stage.
There is plenty of speculation around the goalkeeper position at Arsenal at this time. The decision to sign David Raya on loan in the summer, and then make him the regular starter ahead of fan-favourite Aaron Ramsdale, sent shockwaves through the club.
Mikel Arteta came in for plenty of criticism for his treatment of Ramsdale, who is now clearly unsettled at the Emirates Stadium. For the good of his career, and his international prospects, the 25-year-old needs to be playing regular football. His days at Arsenal may very well be numbered for that reason.

Arsenal fans furious about goalkeeper situation as Patterson enters Raya v Ramsdale debate
Raya is now established as the first choice ‘keeper at the club, and Arsenal now appear to be on the verge of stumping up £27 million to convert his loan move into a permanent transfer. Earlier this season, Arteta did state that his intention was rotate between Ramsdale and Raya regularly. Since then, though, there has been no sign of that plan coming to fruition.
Plenty of Arsenal fans have strong views on how the Raya and Ramsdale situation has been handled, and on the prospect of Patterson joining the club. Taking to X, one fan raged that “WE DO NOT NEED ANOTHER GK!”
Another fan insisted that “Our goalkeeping recruitment is shocking. Selling Leno, Martinez and Ramsdale and bringing in Turner, Raya and this guy.” Another supporter agreed, stating “We’re selling a keeper just to fund for a keeper, yet we can’t sell Eddie because he’s a “key player” in our squad.”
Some fans feel that the club hierarchy need to be held to account for the perceived mishandling of the goalkeeping contingent at the club. One fan said, “Arteta always get it wrong with keepers… Sold Emi choosing to keep Leno.” Another supporter took issue with the manager and sporting director Edu, chipping in with “Sack arteta and edu before it’s too late. We can’t let them keep wasting money like this.”
