Marcus Rashford is fuming that Barcelona were not awarded a penalty after Marc Pubill handled the ball inside the penalty area, just like Gabriel did against Bayern Munich.

Barcelona now have a mountain to climb in Madrid after losing the first leg 2-0, and Rashford was very unhappy with some of the decisions made during the game.

Should the Gunners get the job done against Sporting CP at the Emirates Stadium, it looks as though they will face Atletico Madrid in the semi-finals.

Although the first leg of the tie was filled with controversy, and one of the decisions was very similar to an incident involving Arsenal’s Gabriel back in 2024.

Marcus Rashford says Barcelona should have been awarded a penalty for Marc Pubill touching the ball inside his penalty area; however, it was pointed out to him that Gabriel Magalhaes did the same and also got away with it.

Back in 2024, during Bayern Munich versus Arsenal in the Champions League, Gabriel touched the ball inside the penalty area to take a goal kick, despite David Raya seemingly passing to him.

At the time, the referee described the incident as a “child’s mistake” and waved away claims that it should have been given as a penalty.

Now, a similar incident occurred at the Camp Nou, and Barca were not awarded a penalty, but Rashford was having none of it.

Speaking to Guillem Balague, Rashford told CBS Sports: “A lot of annoyance at what was not given, perhaps a second yellow or certainly a penalty for holding the ball inside the box. It is a penalty. It has happened before, and it’s always given as a penalty.

👀 PENALTY or NOT: Was Gabriel Magalhaes fortunate not to have conceded a penalty here?

However, Balague pointed out: “No, weirdly, Gabriel, against Bayern Munich. The referee said, ‘It’s common sense. Play on’.”

The Barca forward was fuming that his team were not awarded a spot kick and insists that it was ‘common sense’ to give a penalty: “No, but if it’s not common sense, it’s common sense that it’s a penalty.

“It’s the reaction of everybody, of us, but also the reaction of their players. You have to look at this; this is also common sense.

“So, I don’t understand that. I have been in the game where this has happened to us, and it’s a penalty.”

At the time, the Gunners should have counted themselves very lucky not to have been penalised for the incident, and Atletico will be feeling the same.
