Arsenal were beaten by Aston Villa on Saturday in what was a very frustrating afternoon for the Gunners.

Arsenal are still ahead in the title race, but, all of a sudden, things feel that bit more nervy in north London.

There were a number of players who under-performed on the day, but Arsenal fans picked out Eberechi Eze as one player in particular who wasn’t great.

Was Eberechi Eze at fault for Aston Villa’s opening goal or was it David Raya’s mistake?

Villa take the lead😓

Speaking to TNT Sports after the game, Martin Keown has been discussing Eze’s performance, and he says thinks one of his teammates really didn’t help him on the day.

Riccardo Calafiori didn’t help Eberechi Eze

Keown shared his verdict on Eze’s performance, claiming that the England international was not helped by the fact Riccardo Calafiori kept going inside from the left-back position.

The inverted full-back forced Eze to stay a bit wider, and that isn’t necessarily where he flourishes.

“It seemed that Calafiori going into the midfield didn’t really help Eze on the wing, you want Eze in a central position and maybe the overlap needed to come down the line.

“The manager looked at it and made wholesale changes at half-time, and I thought Arsenal then started to control it.”

Eberechi Eze’s stats vs Aston Villa

Eze was the man of the hour a fortnight ago as he scored a hat trick in the North London Derby against Tottenham.

However, against Aston Villa he was worryingly anonymous, and arguably at fault for Villa’s opening goal.

Eze’s stats from the game make for pretty grim reading, it must be said.

Eze barely offered anything in an attacking sense against Villa, and, as Keown says, Calafiori’s support down that flank was almost more of a hindrance than a help.

Luckily, Leandro Trossard looked much brighter when he came on, scoring shortly after his introduction, so perhaps that is the obvious and simple solution to Mikel Arteta’s left-sided problem.
