Michael Owen remains unconvinced by Arsenal striker Viktor Gyokeres, given he still has ‘so many weaknesses’.
Gyokeres netted a brace against Tottenham over the weekend, producing his first major performance in Arsenal colours.
AGREE or DISAGREE: That was Viktor Gyokeres’ best performance in an Arsenal shirt so far…
Following his brace, Gyokeres now has 15 goals and is just two away from becoming the highest-scorer in his debut season at Arsenal since 2018.
Right now, it’s hard to argue against his goal record at the Emirates Stadium; however, Owen still has question marks about the striker.
Michael Owen thinks Viktor Gyokeres has ‘so many weaknesses’
Michael Owen insists that he is not getting carried away over Viktor Gyokeres despite his two goals against Tottenham.
The former Ballon d’Or winner still thinks there are too many questions to be answered by the striker if he hopes to remain at Arsenal long-term.
Speaking about the 27-year-old to Premier League Productions, Owen said: “I like this lad in so many aspects, but I think he’s got so many weaknesses as well.
“To be an Arsenal centre forward for the long-term, am I getting carried away about just one game? No, no I’m not. I still think that the questions are out there.”
However, Owen still had plenty of praise for the Swedish international, calling him one of the best finishers in the Premier League.
“What you cannot question with this lad is his work rate. He’s a fantastic runner. He times his runs well. He knows where the goal is. He arcs his runs perfectly well to stay on side. He is lethal in front of goal,” he added.
“He is one of the very best finishers in the Premier League, and of course we saw that in no uncertain terms.”
Mikel Arteta must stick by Viktor Gyokeres vs Chelsea
Mikel Arteta must now stick by Gyokeres and select him to start against Chelsea next weekend to keep building up his confidence.
Gyokeres has already scored against Chelsea this season, netting a crucial goal in their EFL Cup semi-final win at Stamford Bridge.
Theo Walcott thinks Gyokeres played to his strengths as he went sniffing out their weaknesses and brutally exposed their defence.
Gabriel Jesus now faces a strong battle to win his place back in the team, especially with Kai Havertz also returning very soon.
Hopefully, the Swede can now replicate his performance from the North London derby when Chelsea arrive at the Emirates Stadium.
