Mikel Arteta hasn’t been afraid of making big calls as the manager of Arsenal.
Indeed, when push comes to shove, the Spaniard will make unpopular decisions if he believes it’s for the benefit of the team.
Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Mesut Ozil’s releases showed that in his early days, while his decision to completely discard Aaron Ramsdale a few years ago was another cut-throat call.
Now, Arteta could be set to make another incredibly ruthless decision, and it involves one of last year’s summer signings.

Mikel Arteta could make ruthless call on Viktor Gyokeres
It’s been reported over in Spain that Viktor Gyokeres could leave Arsenal this summer as a part of a swap deal for Julian Alvarez.
Mikel Arteta has made some ruthless calls before, but this could top the lot.
Gyokeres signed last summer, seemingly ending Arsenal’s long-running search for a first-choice striker.
However, the Swede didn’t live up to expectations, and while his goal tally last season was respectable, a lot of those strikes came from penalties or close-range efforts that didn’t take much individual brilliance.
The fact that Gyokeres was dropped for the Champions League final shows that he didn’t quite make the desired impact last season.
After winning the league, one would expect that Arteta would give Gyokeres another chance to kick on, but, by the sounds of it, he could be set to get rid and upgrade straight away.
That’s the stark reality of football in 2026, there’s no time to stand still and no point persisting with a player who, ultimately, isn’t elite.
Arteta is a winner, he wants Arsenal to go beyond ‘competing’ and begin dominating and if the only way to do that is to get rid of Gyokeres and bring in Alvarez, so be it.
It remains to be seen if this deal does come off, but if Gyokeres is allowed to leave Arsenal after just one season, that will be a seriously ruthless call from the Arsenal manager.
