Mikel Arteta responds to Arsenal fans chanting about Aaron Ramsdale

Mikel Arteta brought Aaron Ramsdale back into the Arsenal starting XI for Wednesday evening’s meeting with Brentford.

Goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale recently lost his regular starting spot in the Arsenal team to David Raya. Prior to Wednesday’s EFL Cup clash against Brentford, the Spanish shot-stopper started each of the Gunners’ last three matches, including the Champions League encounter with PSV Eindhoven, and the north London derby against Tottenham Hotspur.

However, Ramsdale won’t have given up on reclaiming his status as the north London club’s No. 1. He produced an excellent performance against Brentford, impressing with some ambitious distribution and making a couple of top saves to preserve his clean sheet.

The 25-year-old is a fan favourite at the Emirates Stadium, and the travelling supporters got behind him throughout the game against Brentford. Arsenal fans could be heard singing his name throughout the match.

Arsenal fans show love for Aaron Ramsdale

After the game, Mikel Arteta was asked what he made of the Arsenal fans vocalising their support for Ramsdale. As quoted by the club’s official website, he said, “we love him more, for sure. We have him every day, we know him, we know his character, we know what he brings to the team, and we are really happy to have him.”

The Spanish coach was also asked if the £30 million goalkeeper had done enough in this match to prove his quality. He replied, “I don’t think I’m the one to ask the quality of Aaron Ramsdale, because I was the one that brought him when everyone was questioning that decision.”

How much game time Ramsdale is afforded throughout the rest of the season remains to be seen. If he isn’t able to get regular game time for the Gunners again, he will surely look to move on from the club before too long.

If he is serious about competing with Jordan Pickford for the right to be the England No. 1, then Ramsdale needs to be a regular starter at club level. He is unlikely to be yet willing to concede his claim to being Arsenal’s first choice, though. It seems plenty of fans are backing him to win this battle for supremacy between the sticks, too.
