Arsenal took a risk when they appointed Mikel Arteta as their new manager back in 2019.

Arteta came into the job having had no managerial experience and was moving from rivals Manchester City where he left his role as Pep Guardiola’s assistant.

Players such as Raheem Sterling praised the work that Arteta did with him in his time at City, helping him think about the game in a different way and to use his attributes as efficiently as possible.

Arsenal are interested in Leroy Sane in the summer and the German winger is another player who benefitted from working with the Spaniard on his movement and mental side of the game.

Mikel Arteta revealed advice from Pep Guardiola

It wasn’t plain sailing for the Spaniard at the start of his Arsenal reign and there were calls for him to be sacked after Thomas Tuchel gave Arteta his darkest day and left the Gunners rock bottom of the Premier League in 2021.

However, Arteta has transformed the team into one that is capable of competing for major honours and still have a shot at winning the Champions League this season.

Speaking on Amazon Prime Video’s ‘All or Nothing: Arsenal’ documentary, Arteta revealed the biggest piece of advice Guardiola gave to him on being a manager and it certainly helped in those difficult times.

On episode three, Arteta stated: “One of the biggest advice that Pep gave me is that it is the loneliest profession. When you close that door, it’s you and your worries and issues and decisions that are always there.

“I don’t regret one bit the decisions that I make, every difficult moment is making me a better person or a better professional and preparing me for something that is going to come forward, is another challenge and this is the way I take it.”

Arteta’s next step is to win the Premier League or Champions League

Remarkably, there is still some pressure on the Arsenal manager over the security of his job. Owner Stan Kroenke still backs Arteta and there are no current plans to sack him despite tailing off in the title race.

Arteta and his team were let down by the board in January after they failed to make a single signing despite Arsenal’s injury crisis this season.

The impending appointment of Andrea Berta as the club’s new sporting director should enable Arteta to get his wishes in the summer window and build a squad capable of lasting the duration of the season.

However, if he gets his transfer wishes and does not deliver a major trophy next season, those questions and murmurs of discontent may increase to a level that cannot be ignored.
