Mikel Arteta backs Jack Wilshere to become the next Arsenal manager

Jack Wilshere has been a fan favourite at Arsenal since he made his debut as a teenager.

The Englishman was one of the most talented players ever to come through Hale End, and everybody expected him to be a superstar at Arsenal.

However, injuries ruined Wilshere’s career. The now-31-year-old constantly found himself on the sidelines and it got to a point where clubs stopped trusting his fitness.

After a lot of thought and not much interest from clubs, Wilshere decided to retire in June last year, and he then took up the job to become the Arsenal U18s manager.

After a good year at the club, reports revealed that Wilshere has received an offer from the Colorado Rapids to become their head coach. The Athletic claimed he has already held talks with them.

Mikel Arteta was asked about this today, and he said he’s really happy with the work Wilshere has been doing at the club. He also backed him to become the Arsenal manager one day.

He said, as quoted by Arsenal.com: “I’m really happy that Jack is part of the setup.

“I think he’s done really well, I think he was really needed around the academy and the place, and these things are going to happen when people are doing well, he’s going to get attraction, and then it’s going to come down to him to make the best decision for his career.”

When asked if Wilshere could become the Gunners boss, Arteta said: “Yeah, but way down the line you don’t know when that is, it could be very soon!

“He’s got the potential to do it, now he’s clear in his mind what he wants to do and the reason why he wants to do it, and I think it’s a big asset for the club to have him here.”

Wilshere needs some experience outside Arsenal

Being the Arsenal U18s manager is great, but Wilshere is still a long way off top-level management.

Let’s not forget that the Englishman has only been coaching for just over a year now, and even though he has come a long way, he still has a lot to learn.

A senior job at a club outside Arsenal would be a great opportunity for Wilshere. Although the Colorado Rapids are in a very difficult place right now, he will have the backing of the board there – Stan Kroenke owns that club.

It will be interesting to see what Wilshere will do, but if he ever wants to become the Arsenal manager, he will need to earn it by going out and gaining some top-level experience.
