Unfortunately, we are once again at a point in the football season where Vinicius Junior has been the victim of alleged racist abuse.

Real Madrid star Vinicius was at the centre of controversy involving Benfica ace Gianluca Prestianni as things got heated.

Matters weren’t helped afterwards as Jose Mourinho appeared to point the blame at Vinicius.

Since the incident, UEFA have announced an investigation into the incident, while Bayern boss Vincent Kompany has called Mourinho’s comments a ‘huge mistake’.

Now, Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta has had his say on proceedings ahead of facing Tottenham this weekend.

These types of incident are never pleasant and it’s obviously important we wait for any facts and investigation before passing judgement.

However, in the aftermath of the latest issue involving Vinicius, Mikel Arteta has spoken on how he sees the state of play.

“That’s why we have meetings with the Premier League or UEFA before the season starts to make sure that everybody is very aware of the protocols and what we expect from each other,” Arteta told the press.

“Obviously, there is no room for racism in this sport. I think we need to stick to that, and then the manner of acting, I think you have to go case by case to understand what’s the best option.”

Arteta’s comments are, of course, measured and represent a clear view on the no room for racism matters while also opening the door for things to play out.

Mikel Arteta has seen first hand how racism can affect players

Given the situation we saw unfold with Bukayo Saka after the Euros a few years back, few managers are better placed to speak on such issues than Mikel Arteta.

Saka’s treatment after his penalty miss at Wembley were nothing short of atrocious and thankfully, the English game seems to see these incidents less and less.

However, we still have a long way to go and this continued problem that Vinicius seems to keep encountering cannot go on.

Quite what the authorities will say this time, remains to be seen. But swift and strong action should be taken if there is a need, otherwise it’s just another incident falling by the wayside.
