Brighton boss Fabian Hurzeler has hit out at Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta over comments made on a penalty awarded in the game between the two teams.

The Gunners were held to a draw at the Amex Stadium on Saturday evening, despite taking the lead in the first half through Ethan Nwaneri.

The Seagulls made some changes in the second half and they paid off as they grew into the game and made an impact.

Despite some big changes, the home side were only able to draw level through a penalty decision made by referee Anthony Taylor.

William Saliba clashed heads with Joao Pedro in the penalty area and after a long think about the decision, it was given as a spot kick.

The Brazilian striker stepped up and tucked away the penalty, earning his team a point while harming Arsenal and their chances of winning the Premier League title.

The penalty became a contentious point from the match, one that dominated conversation afterwards.

Fabian Hurzeler hits out at Mikel Arteta over Brighton vs Arsenal penalty

Speaking after the game, Mikel Arteta dismissed Brighton’s penalty claim, stating he had never seen a decision like that in his lifetime.

It was certainly a bizarre call, one that turned the game on its head for Arsenal, with fans claiming VAR made a mistake, which will only add to the frustration.

Brighton boss Fabian Hurzeler hit back at Arteta though, giving a defiant response during his post-match press conference.

Speaking to the media, he said: “I don’t understand how they can say that… it’s a clear penalty.”

The decision has split opinion across football, though it’s clear that those of an Arsenal persuasion believe it shouldn’t have been awarded as a penalty.

While the frustration is there, it’s too late for Arsenal to make any changes about it, with the match now over.

Arsenal must forget referee call for EFL Cup semi-final

With the Premier League title looking an increasingly unlikely ambition for Arsenal, attention must shift and quickly for Arteta.

Next up is a clash with Newcastle United in the EFL Cup semi-final first leg at the Emirates Stadium, where plenty is up for grabs.

The manager will need some silverware to show for the efforts made this season, especially if the chance of winning a title is gone.

Having been in the final four, the Gunners have a real shot at earning a trophy in the EFL Cup, though they will need a big performance.

Newcastle are a team in form and with a second leg away at St. James’ Park, taking something north will be key to any qualification hopes.
