Arsenal’s title challenge remains in full swing but it’s important to spare a thought for the injured Mikel Merino as well.

Merino was playing a key role under Mikel Arteta, filling in both in midfield and further forward if needed while Kai Havertz was out injured.

The Spaniard was doing the business as well. Merino had managed six goals in all competitions, including four in the Premier League.

If you had a message for Bukayo Saka ahead of his return, what would it be?

However, a serious injury a few weeks ago halted his season in its tracks and after reports he’d miss the rest of the campaign, the man himself appears to have confirmed it.

For Merino, it will be gut-wrenching to have to sit back and watch on as his teammates fight on all four fronts.

He was actively playing a key role and his injury is a blow to the Gunners.

However, over on Instagram, Merino appears to be in a positive frame of mind and he’s confirmed that his surgery has indeed been a success, with the road to recovery now on his mind.

Mikel Merino could end up being replaced this summer

This injury comes at a bad time both for Merino and Arsenal.

They lose a versatile player who was contributing when needed, while the player himself gives up his spot in the squad and won’t feature until next season now.

The worry for Merino here is that while he is out, others have the chance to impress. Then, come the summer, when Arsenal no doubt dip into the market once again, Merino will be concerned that someone else comes in and replaces him further.

Hopefully, Mikel Arteta has seen enough of Merino to suggest he’s a big player for next season too.

But with links to Sandro Tonali continuing to be mentioned, Merino could find himself further down the ladder than he was before injury.
