Arsenal will be aiming to win silverware this season, having come close to being crowned Premier League champions in each of the last two campaigns.
Mikel Arteta is aware of the need to add trophies to his CV, and the Spanish coach will be convinced that his Arsenal squad has what it takes it takes to triumph in this regard.
Upon signing his new contract recently, Arteta made his demand for trophies clear. Arsenal fans will also be expecting the North London outfit to deliver this time around, after their recent progress and near misses.
Arteta added to his squad over the course of the recent summer transfer window in an effort take his side one step closer to silverware success, with Mikel Merino amongst those to arrive at the Emirates Stadium.
Mikel Merino vows to help Arsenal win trophies
Merino made his first start for the Gunners against Bournemouth last time out, and whilst he failed to produce his finest performance, the midfielder’s profile promises that he will be able to have a positive impact for his new club.
Merino is a real aerial threat, technically gifted on the ball, and will add extra physicality to the Arsenal midfield contingent. On top of that, the 28-year-old has also brought valuable winning experience with him.
In a press conference ahead of the Gunners’ Champions League clash with Shakhtar Donetsk, as shared by Hayters TV, he was asked how he will help to deliver silverware.
Merino said: “I think we have a pretty complete team, a pretty complete coaching staff as well. They all have that winning mentality as well. They might not have the experience yet, because we also have a really, really young team.
“Like I said, I luckily have some experiences where I won [trophies]. So yeah, just the experience, when you have the moment of truth, when you are in the final or semi-finals, to be able to keep that mentality, to keep that calmness, and try to do whatever you are doing on a daily basis that has made you get to that stage.”
What Mikel Merino has won before
Previously in his club career, Merino has won a DFB-Pokal with Borussia Dortmund, and a Copa del Rey with Real Sociedad.
On the international stage, he has been triumphant in the Nations League. The Spaniard was also an important part of the squad the triumphed at Euro 2024, alongside Arsenal teammate David Raya, beating England in the final of that competition.
Merino was also a silver medalist at the 2020 Olympic Games.
