Arsenal’s season has not ended how they would have hoped back in August.

Mikel Arteta’s side all but secured second place in the Premier League with a 1-0 victory over Newcastle at the Emirates Stadium, however, hopes were high for the league title this campaign.

John Obi Mikel has slammed Arteta for finishing second again, however, the Gunners boss accepts he has failed this season with Arteta’s Arsene Wenger comparison highlighting his disappointment.

There is optimism around the club though that Andrea Berta is set to deliver some major signings this summer and one Arsenal star is set to continue to flourish next campaign amid high praise from pundits.

Myles Lewis-Skelly named as young player of the season by Gary Neville and Jamie Carragher

Speaking to Sky Sports Monday Night Football coverage of Brighton v Liverpool, Gary Neville and Jamie Carragher have named Myles Lewis-Skelly as their young player of the season.

Carragher praised Lewis-Skelly’s performances in ‘big’ games this season, particularly highlighting his display in the Bernabeu, and claimed that only the likes of Wayne Rooney have been close to winning the award at just 18.

Neville compared him to Bukayo Saka for the way he has cemented his place in the Arsenal side in a position the club have had difficulties with for a number of seasons.

Neville stated: “The biggest compliment you can pay to a young player is that they slot in, Saka’s done it for Arsenal as well in the last few years.

“But to go in and do what he’s done in his position and Like Carra [Carragher] said the ability to take the ball in the biggest games in tight situations it’s incredible what he’s doing.”

Both pundits also agreed that the Hale End star will become an England regular at left back with the World Cup looming next summer.

“Definitely, the way he’s playing and the maturity he has shown, the way he handles both sides of the game both the defensive part and the attacking part. He goes into midfield, all the things you want from a modern full back, he’s tenacious.”

Myles Lewis-Skelly makes Jamie Carragher’s Premier League team of the season

Also speaking on Monday Night Football, Carragher named Lewis-Skelly in his Premier League team of the season.

Declan Rice was the other Gunners star that made the cut on Carragher’s team, in a midfield trio with Sandro Tonali of Newcastle and Alexis MacAllister of Liverpool.

The former Liverpool defender has been highly critical of Arsenal this season and Carragher has urged Arteta to change his style and play in a more attacking style.

Whether Arteta does release the shackles a bit more next season remains to be seen but with the likes of Rice and Lewis-Skelly in his squad, the Gunners will be challenging once again.
