Neil Warnock has praised Viktor Gyokeres’ start to life at Arsenal, claiming that he’s been better than he expected.

Gyokeres arrived at Arsenal this summer for big-money, and it’s fair to say he hasn’t had the dream start to life in north London.

The Swede only has four Premier League goals to his name, while injuries have been an issue in recent weeks.

However, speaking to TalkSPORT, Warnock has reserved some special praise for the striker.

The former Premier League manager says that he actually didn’t think Gyokeres was Premier League standard when he saw him play at Coventry, but he’s happy to say he’s been proven wrong.

Neil Warnock makes Viktor Gyokeres admission

Warnock spoke about Gyokeres and how he’s exceeded his expectations.

The former Crystal Palace gaffer says that he didn’t think Gyokeres would be this good, claiming that while he may not be scoring for fun, he’s holding up the ball well and doing a good job in a different way.

“I didn’t think in fairness to him he’s done better than what I thought at Arsenal because when he was at Coventry I didn’t think he was Premiership level if I’m honest,” Warnock said.

“But I do think he gives them something that they hadn’t had.

“He can hold the ball up. He can bring other people. So if Saka and all the others are scoring goals then he’s worth his money. He doesn’t have to score goals doing the job he does because they never had a man like that.”

Warnock says that Gyokeres has been better than he expected, but, by the sounds of things, his expectations weren’t too high.

Indeed, Warnock didn’t even think Gyokeres was Premier League level, and while the striker has proven he’s at that level, he still has some way to go to prove he’s a title-winning calibre striker.

Four goals in 13 appearances isn’t a great return for a big-money striker at this level, but, it’s still early days for Gyokeres and he could still rocket up the scoring charts if he can find his form.

If Arsenal are indeed to win the Premier League this season, Gyokeres’ output may need to improve.
