According to a report from The Times, Newcastle United are interested in Arsenal’s Granit Xhaka. The Swiss international’s future at the Emirates remains a doubt after an altercation with the home fans in the game against Crystal Palace.
Unai Emery confirmed earlier this week that Xhaka was no longer Arsenal’s skipper. Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang is our new club captain but is forcing the midfielder out of the club really necessary?
The report claims that lack of game time could hurt Xhaka’s chances of playing for his country at the Euros. However, it would be foolish to even consider selling him in January, especially to a fellow Premier League club.
Xhaka still has enough quality to play for Arsenal despite the amount of stick he gets from fans and pundits. Emery’s reluctance to use Mesut Ozil makes the Swissman one of our most important players on the attack.
His vision is fantastic and his ability to execute long passes perfectly is among the best in the league. As a box to box midfielder, Xhaka would be ideal for most clubs in the Premier League and an isolated incident should not change people’s minds about his quality.
Selling him now will almost guarantee a massive loss for Arsenal who paid £35m (BBC) for him in 2016. Emery and the board will have to smart about their decision to let him go but selling him to another English club should not even be considered.
Cash plus Xhaka deal?
If Xhaka and the club are adamant that he has to leave, they should consider a foreign team. A return to Bundesliga where he thrived makes a lot of sense for him and if Arsenal are smart about it, they could get a talented youngster from Germany.
Sky Germany claimed that Arsenal are interested in Borussia Monchengladbach’s Denis Zakaria. One Swiss international plus cash for another makes sense considering that Xhaka was brilliant for the Bundesliga side during his time there.
