Match of the Day pundits were blown away by Aaron Ramsdale after the Arsenal goalkeeper’s save on Ivan Toney yesterday against Brentford.

The England international returned to the starting XI for the Gunners with David Raya unable to play against his parent club in the Premier League, with Ramsdale filling in for the Spaniard.

Despite a horror moment in the first half that saw Ramsdale gift Brentford a goal, the £30m signing from Sheffield United more than redeemed himself after the break with a string of fantastic saves.

And speaking on Match of the Day, Gary Lineker, Ian Wright and Ashley Williams were all amazed by one save Ramsdale made against Toney, who almost scored a contender for goal of the season had it not been for the Arsenal man.

Indeed, the error in the first half will sit heavily on Ramsdale’s shoulders, yet the Arsenal ace more than redeemed himself with his performance after the restart, with pundits rightly praising the goalkeeper.

Lineker said about Ramsdale: “He showed great character in the second-half,” with Phillips adding: “He makes up for this [Brentford’s goal] as this would have been the goal of the season, and it’s only equally as good as the save that Ramsdale pulls off.

“It’s some strike that, and to move your feet and to get back into position, it’s hell of a save,” with Wright simply adding the thought every Arsenal fan had when Ramsdale made the save: “Oof, jeez!”

In all likelihood, yesterday’s match against Brentford will be the last time Arsenal fans see Ramsdale play for the club, with Raya the clear number one for Mikel Arteta.

Yet it is fitting that the England international will leave north London with a huge performance on his last game for the club, with Arsenal owing last night’s win against Brentford to Ramsdale.

The former Sheffield United star redeemed himself in a big way after the mistake in the opening half, and Ramsdale will forever hold a special spot in the hearts of many Arsenal fans.
