Partey struggles, Jesus gets 6/10: Arsenal player ratings vs Southampton

Arsenal were held to a 1-1 draw by Southampton this afternoon, and here are our player ratings.

Granit Xhaka‘s strike in the first half put us in front and we were really comfortable at that point. However, we looked nothing like our usual self after about 20 minutes, and that cost us.

Arsenal player ratings vs Southampton

Aaron Ramsdale: 7/10

Ramsdale dealt with James Ward-Prowse’s dangerous corners really well. Sadly, he couldn’t do much with Saints’ goal in the second half.

Ben White: 8/10

One of the few players who deserves some credit today. White started the game brilliantly and his assist for Xhaka’s goal shows how much he has improved as a right-back.

William Saliba: 6.5/10

Definitely not his best game for Arsenal. Saliba almost cost us with a loose pass early in the second half, and his distribution wasn’t at his highest level either. An afternoon to forget.

Gabriel Magalhaes: 7/10

Not the result he would’ve hoped for right after signing a new contract. Gabriel did OK defensively for the most parts, but we felt he was a bit too slow to get the ball forward – even when we were desperately trying to score.

Takehiro Tomiyasu: 6/10

After the highs of Liverpool, Tomiyasu struggled today. He wasn’t anywhere near his best – both with and without possession – and we’re sure Arteta will think twice about playing him at left-back when we’re not up against an inverted winger

Granit Xhaka: 8/10

This man just can’t stop scoring. The strike today was Xhaka’s fourth goal of the season – that’s more than he has scored in the last three seasons combined. Sadly, that didn’t prove to be the winger.

Thomas Partey: 6/10

Partey was decent in the first half for Arsenal. However, his second half display – especially his positioning for the goal – was really poor, and Arteta will not be happy. Easily his worst performance of the season.

Gabriel Martinelli: 7/10

The Brazilian showed flashes of brilliance at times, but he, like most of his teammates, couldn’t do much in the final third. It was just one of those days for everyone.

Martin Odegaard: 7.5/10

Tried very hard to influence the game, and could’ve easily picked up two assists. Sadly, the chances he created were squandered.

Bukayo Saka: 7/10

Another player who just couldn’t get his usual game going, and some of the referee’s decisions didn’t help either. Southampton shut his game down in the second half, and he couldn’t do much from that point.

Gabriel Jesus: 6/10

The Brazilian worked tirelessly as usual, but he really should’ve scored today. His volley after a brilliant piece of skill from Odegaard was saved well by Gavin Bazunu, and he just appeared to run out of steam after being put through on goal. A poor display.
