Paul Merson would love to see Arsenal sign Sandro Tonali on deadline day and believes it would be a brilliant addition for Mikel Arteta’s squad.

Arsenal are in talks with Tonali on deadline day in what would be a huge move for Mikel Arteta’s team on the final day of the winter window.

Newcastle are currently dismissing Tonali speculation; however, Arsenal seem intent on bringing in a replacement for the injured Mikel Merino.

Tonali has been linked as a replacement for the 29-year-old, and Merson has been making one thing clear about the Italian midfielder.

Paul Merson reacts to Sandro Tonali’s possible move to Arsenal

Paul Merson has called Sandro Tonali a ‘phenomenal footballer’ and claims he would walk into any team in world football.

The 25-year-old is one of the best Premier League midfielders and would be the dream option as cover for Declan Rice.

In fact, Paul Scholes thinks Tonali is better than Rice, which just shows how highly rated the Italian international has become.

When asked about the possibility of Tonali joining Arsenal, Merson told Sky Sports: “He’s a proper player. Yeah, I would take Tonali tomorrow morning.

“Everyone’s saying he wouldn’t play. Arsenal are going for the Champions League, they’re going for the league, and they’re in four cups still.

What is the maximum fee Arsenal should pay to sign Sandro Tonali?

“They’re not just planning for this season. They’re planning to dominate football for the next five or six years.

“I mean, he is a phenomenal footballer. He would walk into anybody’s team in the world of football, in my opinion, Tonali.”

Tonali would be an elite signing if Arsenal could pull it off, but if they cannot get it done on deadline day, Andrea Berta should line up a deal for the summer.

Newcastle want at least £80m for Tonali this month, and that would surely be the same in the summer, given his contract runs until 2029.

Arsenal’s Sandro Tonali move is a great show of ambition from Andrea Berta

Regardless of whether a move for Tonali is possible, it’s great to see Berta showing such ambition in the transfer window.

It is rare to see clubs showing such ambition in the January window, so it’s a refreshing change to see the sporting director having such an influence.

In the summer, the Gunners kept pushing and signed Eberechi Eze and Piero Hincapie, with the North London club clearly continuing to back their Italian director.
