Paul Merson says he knows what everyone would be saying if Arsenal hadn’t lost to Liverpool

Paul Merson has claimed that the narrative would be very different around Arsenal had they not lost away at Liverpool.

The Gunners have had an excellent start to the new campaign, sitting top of the Premier League table, winning five of their opening seven matches and conceding just three goals in the process.

Mikel Arteta’s team have also won their opening two games in the Champions League without conceding a goal, meaning they have by far the best defensive record in Europe.

Alan Shearer is now confident that Arsenal will win the league, and he’s not the only pundit who is high on the North Londoners right now.

Paul Merson says people would be talking about an invincible season for Arsenal without Liverpool loss

Liverpool narrowly beat Arsenal back in August, courtesy of a sublime 84th-minute free-kick from Dominik Szoboszlai.

The Gunners were the better team in the opening 45 minutes at Anfield, and although they dropped off in the second half, a draw would certainly have been a fair result.

Without this defeat, Arsenal would have eight wins and two draws in their first ten matches, and would therefore be on course for going the entire season unbeaten.

Writing for Sportskeeda, Merson claimed that talk around a potential Invincibles season would be happening right now had Szoboszlai not produced his moment of magic.

“I actually think that if Arsenal win this game [against Fulham], they will walk the league title!” the pundit wrote.

“It’s an unbelievable squad and the depth is insane. Arsenal have two good players for every position on the pitch. When you compare it to Liverpool, if Virgil van Dijk gets injured, goodnight! Ryan Gravenberch injured? Goodnight! Even Mo Salah, again, goodnight.

“Arsenal look unstoppable. Nobody can catch them if they keep playing like this! If they hadn’t lost to Liverpool, we would’ve been thinking, ‘can anyone actually beat them this season?’

Arsenal’s defensive record means they will hardly lose this season

Arsenal drew 14 games in the Premier League this season.

Arteta’s team lost just four games, the same number as Liverpool, which means their inability to turn these close games they drew into three points was ultimately the difference.

This will likely be similar this time around. The Gunners will hardly lose a single game all campaign, because they’re so good defensively.

As shown by the data above, Arsenal give up so little in terms of chances for the opposition. Teams simply won’t be capable of finding the back of the net very often against the North Londoners, which will enable them to win the majority of games they play.

In fact, it would be a surprise to see Arteta’s outfit lose more than another two league games in the rest of the season. It’s merely a matter of converting draws into wins.
