Paul Pogba has backed Manchester United to win the Premier League under Michael Carrick.

The former United and France midfielder could not resist taking a pop at Arsenal in the process.

Speaking on talkSPORT, Pogba was asked whether Carrick’s side could win the title in the near future.

He was bullish and confident, and took a barely disguised swipe at the current champions.

“Yes. Yeah, I think Manchester United will win in the next years. They’re going to be champions of the Premier League,” Pogba said.

“If Arsenal can be champions, Manchester United will definitely be champions. It’s a big statement. No disrespect. I believe they will. In the next five years, they’re gonna win.”

It is a strange thing to say from Pogba, really, who seems to be suggesting that the Gunners winning the league has lowered the bar.

That is despite Arsenal winning 45 matches across all competitions — a feat only bettered by five teams in Premier League history, and only once by Manchester United.

Arsenal fans, of course, will have a simpler ready-made response.

The club that Pogba is backing to win the title in the next five years have not won the league since Sir Alex Ferguson’s final season in 2013.

Arsenal waited 22 years. United are currently on 13 — and counting.

Pogba’s record as a pundit is about as reliable as his injury record as a player.

United are rebuilding under Carrick, and while there are encouraging signs, they remain some distance from genuine title contention.

Carrick will need to juggle European football alongside the domestic competitions next season, which is a whole different kettle of fish compared to playing one game a week.

Arsenal, meanwhile, are Premier League champions, Champions League finalists and in the process of strengthening their squad further this summer.

If United do win the title in the next five years, they will almost certainly have to go through Arteta’s side to do it.

No disrespect, Paul.
